Toolbox Tip 2
Number Search



Purpose: To reinforce number recognition in early years students, emergent English as Second Language readers. 

When to Use: This activity is an activity for students that finish their work early and can employ their extra time in the class reading and writing corner working independently.

Time: Non-determined, the activity can be assumed for a few minutes to twenty minutes maximum (determined by early years maximum twenty minutes span). 
However, the activity has a time frame flexibility.

Materials: All materials would
be set up in the reading and writing corner. 
-glue
-scissors
-index cards
-magazines
-newspapers

Activity Description:
The child will search for number symbols and words that start with the letter studied that week.  For example, the week we study
Number seventeen the student will search for numbers 17 in the publications or one and 7 cut out letters to write “seventeen” the student can search and can find in the newspapers and magazines. 
The student will cut out the numbers and words and paste on index cards.  The index cards will later be used for other activities and vocabulary reinforcement and practice.

Modification for
Different Learners: The activity does not need modifications for different learners,
by the nature of the activity the child will work at his or her own
pace.

Skills to Work On:
-Reading skills- number and lletter recognition and word identification.
-Fine Motor Skills- cutting and pasting.
